Will about his favorite player of the Atlanta Hawks:
When the Atlanta Hawks traded a couple of forgettable players to the Utah Jazz for recently-drafted Dominique Wilkins, they didn't know it would go down as one of the worst trades in NBA history -- for the Jazz. Wilkins didn't average less than 20 points a game any season until his last three. His amazing under-the-basket moves and slam dunks led to Wilkins earning the nickname "The Human Highlight Film." He helped the Hawks to remain contenders for his entire career; they made the playoffs 8 years out of the 11 he played there.
Wilkins' come-out year was 1985-1986, when he won the NBA scoring title by averaging 30.3 points per game. The Hawks won more than 50 games and made the playoffs. Unfortunately, during Wilkins' tenure he wasn't able to take the Hawks deep in the postseason. However, he delighted Atlanta Hawks fans with acrobatic dunks and high-scoring games. He was always exciting to watch.
Wilkins was voted to the All-Star team nine times in his career and won the Slam Dunk Championship two times. He was an extremely accurate free throw shooter, and holds records for the number of free throws made in a game without missing and consecutive free throws in a game. He is also one of only six players to average 25 or more points per game for 10 consecutive seasons.
The Atlanta Hawks had four consecutive 50-win seasons while Wilkins was on the team. Unfortunately, Wilkins played in the Eastern Conference during the heyday of Detroit and Boston, and the beginning of Micheal Jordan's dominance in Chicago. Those three teams were responsible for 4 of Wilkins' 8 early dispatches from the playoffs.
Although he never won a championship, Wilkins was one of the most dynamic scores and exciting players in NBA history. He was elected into the NBA Hall of Fame in 2006. Atlanta Hawks fans won't forget the thrills they got from watching "The Human Highlight Film." |
