The Carolina Panthers are a professional football team that joined the NFL, along with the Jacksonville Jaguars, in the 1995 expansion. Based in Charlotte, NC, the Panthers enjoy the support of fans from across the Carolinas. The team has had its ups and downs over the years ranging the gamut from a 1 and 15 season record (2001) to a Super Bowl appearance (2004).

Talk about putting an NFL expansion team in the Carolinas began in 1987 when Jerry Richardson, majority owner of the Panthers, started looking into the possibility of achieving his dream of bringing an NFL team to his native state of North Carolina. 5 years later, the NFL published a list of areas which could potentially acquire an expansion team, Charlotte was one area. After Richardson announced that he had the means to finance a stadium for the team, and an amazing show of support from fans that resulted in a sell out of all seats in the first day, the league owners voted unanimously to award an expansion team to the area; the Carolina Panthers were born.

The team played its inaugural season in 1995 in the NFC West division prior to the 2002 realignment. The realignment changed the number of divisions in the NFL from 6 to 8 (4 in each conference) and moved the Panthers to the NFC South division along with the New Orleans Saints, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and the Atlanta Falcons. The team plays in Bank of America Stadium, originally called Carolinas Stadium prior to a stint where it was named Ericsson Stadium.

The Carolina Panthers greatest achievement was winning the NFC Title in 2003 and thus appearing in Super Bowl XXXVIII where they fell 3 points short to the New England Patriots.

Despite their relatively short history, the Panthers silver and black has been worn by some very talented players such as linebacker Kevin Greene, running back Stephen Davis, wide receiver Wesley Walls, kicker John Kasay, quarterback Jake Delhomme, defensive lineman Julius Peppers, wide receiver Muhsin Muhammad, linebacker Sam Mills and wide receiver Steve Smith. The team has also had its share of famous coaches such as George Seifert, winner of 5 Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49rs (2 as head coach and 3 as an assistant) and Dom capers, winner of a coach of the year award.

All in all, the Panthers have been a great team over the years who's fans continue to support and adore, and although they haven't yet brought home a Super Bowl Trophy, their fan base is stronger than ever and understands that it takes time, endurance and patience for an NFL team to win the ultimate prize.
