A year before the Dallas Cowboys drafted Emmitt Smith, they finished the regular season 1-15, a league worst. In his first year in the league, Smith rushed for 937 yards and 11 touchdowns, and the Cowboys improved to 7-9. This year would precede one of the greatest runs in history by the Cowboys, or any NFL team for that matter.

That run was dependent to a large degree on Emmitt Smith. From 1991 to 2001, Smith had eleven straight 1,000 yard seasons, and he was the first NFL player to rush for more then 1,400 in five consecutive seasons (from 1991 to 1995). Smith was a workhorse back that Dallas relied on heavily. His career 4.2 yards per carry kept defenses honest and allowed Dallas to set up a lethal play-action pass, which made quarterback Troy Aikman and wide receiver Michael Irvin successful as well.

Behind the running of Smith, the Cowboys went 11-5 in 1991 and made the playoffs. In 1992, the Cowboys began establishing their dominance, going 13-3 and winning the Super Bowl. Smith rushed for 1713 yards and 18 touchdowns that year. He led the Cowboys to a Super Bowl victory again in 1993, when he had 1900 yards from scrimmage. In 1993, he also won the Super Bowl MVP for his 132-yard, 2 touchdown performance. 1995 was Smith's best year yet. He rushed for 1773 yards and 25 touchdowns, as well as caught 62 passes. The Cowboys won the Super Bowl again that year, their third in four years.

Smith finished his career as the all-time NFL rushing leader with 18,355 yards. He also had 21,564 yards from scrimmage and 175 touchdowns. His touchdown total is second only to Jerry Rice all-time and leads all running backs. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 2010.

Not many players have impacted their team in the way Smith did. He was a gritty, reliable runner, who was the foundation of the Cowboys dynasty of the early 1990s. He impressed not only with his running ability, but also with his toughness; these qualities combined to make him one of the best NFL players of all time.
