As a fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars, I have an advantage over fans of other teams in that I can personally remember each year of my team's existence. That's not as big a feat as it sounds, since the Jags have only been around since 1995. The Jaguars entered the NFL at a pretty slow pace. After their first season and a 4-12 finish, I remember thinking that it would be quite a few years and a bunch of first-round draft picks before the Jags were a contender. They shocked everyone in their second season, though, by making it to the AFC Championship game. They started off 3-6 that year, then won 6 of their last 7. The Patriots beat them 20-6 in that championship game, but just the fact that they made it there made the season worthwhile.

By 1997, the Jags didn't resemble an expansion team anymore. They made the playoffs in 1997-1999 but 1999 stands out as a big year in the history of the organization. The Jags went 14-2, good for the best record in the league, and really looked like Super Bowl contenders. They routed Miami in their first playoff game 62-7. But then they lost a heart breaker to the Tennessee Titans. The Jags led 14-10 at halftime but the Titans scored 23 unanswered points in the second half. The Titans went on to lose the Superbowl to the Rams that year.

The late 1990s marked a high point for the Jags. The following years they have usually had a strong team, but have struggled to become a true contender. Part of the problem with that is being in the same division as the Indianapolis Colts, who had Peyton Manning at the helm for all of those years. In 2005, for example, I thought the Jags could give the Colts a fight for the division title. The Colts, though, started off 13-0 and I saw those hopes dashed. Despite their ups and downs, however, for a fan who likes strong defense and grind-it-out offense, the Jags have been a lot of fun to watch.
