In 2001, I didn't expect the New England Patriots to be all that great. I thought I would spend another year suffering through the misery of being a Patriots fan.They had finished 5-11 in 2000, which was head coach Bill Belichick's first year. They started 2001 with an 0-2 record, but a significant event occurred in that second loss. Veteran quarterback Drew Bledsoe was knocked out of the game after getting hit hard by Mo Lewis, a linebacker for the New York Jets. In his place, Belichick sent in second-year quarterback Tom Brady. With Tom Brady at the helm, the Patriots finished 11-5 and won their last 6 games. The Patriots had the second seed in the playoffs and made it to the Super Bowl. There, however, they faced a St. Louis Rams team that was heavily favored. The Rams had one of the most powerful offenses in history, led by quarterback Kurt Warner and running back Marshall Faulk. The Patriots shocked the Rams and the rest of the world, however, and won the game on a 48-yard field goal by Adam Vinatieri as time ran out.

This Super Bowl win was the beginning of a dynasty led by Tom Brady and Bill Belichick. They were back in the Super Bowl in 2003, where they beat the Carolina Panthers in an exciting shootout. It took almost 27 minutes for the first touchdown to be scored, but after that there was a scoring explosion. The Patriots ended up edging the Panthers 32-29. The Patriots run didn't end there, though. In 2004 they were back in the Super Bowl again after finishing 14-2 in the regular season. In the championship they beat Donovan McNabb and the Philadelphia Eagles 31-24.

Two years later the Patriots had one of the most amazing, yet heartbreaking seasons of all time. They went undefeated in the regular season, the first team to do so in a 16 game season. They faced the wild-card New York Giants in the Super Bowl. In one of the biggest upsets ever, however, the Giants edged the Pats 17-14.

At one time I was embarrassed to admit I was a Patriots fan. But starting in 2001, I was ashamed no longer and now can be proud to say that my team is one of the most successful franchises of the modern era.
