Why you need New York Jets streaming

Jacob about his favorite player of the New York Jets:

When you talk about the great running backs, or even just the great New York Jets players of the past twenty years, it might be easy to forget Curtis Martin's name. Martin wasn't a flashy runner or personality, but he was one of the most reliable and consistent running backs in the NFL from 1995-2005. Add that to the fact that he finished his career as the fourth leading rusher of all time, and it seems apparent that Curtis Martin's name should be included in any conversation about the greatest players of the last twenty years.

Martin started his career with the New England Patriots. He rushed for 1,487 yards in his rookie season and won the Offensive Rookie of the Year Award. After two more years of 1,000+ rushing yards and a Super Bowl appearance with the Patriots, the Jets signed Martin as a free agent in 1997.

Martin's productivity didn't suffer as a result of changing teams. He rushed for 1,287 yards and 8 touchdowns in his first year with the Jets, and followed it up with 1,464 yards in his second year. In 1998 he took the Jets to the AFC Conference Championship, where they lost to the eventual Super Bowl Champion Broncos.

Martin would continue to churn out 1,000 yard seasons. In fact, the only season he would dip below the 1,000 yard mark would be in his last season, 2005. In 2004, he became the oldest player to win a rushing title at 31 years old. He finished his career with staggering numbers: 14,101 rushing yards, 17,430 yards from scrimmage, and 100 touchdowns. During his seven year tenure with the Jets, Martin only missed one game. He was elected to the Pro Bowl 5 times in his career and is the New York Jets all-time leading rusher.

With these statistics, it's hard to believe that Curtis Martin isn't mentioned in the same breath with players like Barry Sanders or Emmitt Smith. Yet, while those two were playing, Martin was quietly building a similar pedigree. Martin is awaiting induction into the Hall of Fame, and was a finalist in 2011.
