Martin is silver and black forever:
When I first started watching football regularly, the Raiders were one of the most exciting teams in the league. They had recently drafted running back and dual-sport star Bo Jackson. Jackson was the type of player who always caused you to look up when he touched the ball; there was a chance he could break a touchdown run on any carry. With Jackson and wide receiver Tim Brown, the Raiders had a potent offense and were contenders for several years. I was drawn in by their high-flying offense and "bad boy" image, and at that point I declared myself a Raiders fan for life.
The success of the early 90s faded, however, and just after I had pledged my allegiance to the Oakland Raiders they went into a slump. From 1994-1999 they didn't make the playoffs, and I watched as mercurial owner Al Davis went through head coaches and quarterbacks with reckless abandon. I stuck with them, though, hoping that soon I would see the Raiders get back to their winning ways.
In 2000, my waiting paid off as quarterback Rich Gannon blossomed into an NFL star and an extremely accurate passer. He led the Raiders to the AFC Championship in 2000 and the Divisional Playoffs in 2001. The 2001 game was gut-wrenchingly close, but they lost to the Patriots 16-13. In 2002, however, the Raiders finished 11-5 and won their division. Rich Gannon was the MVP of the league, and the Raiders breezed through the playoffs by blowing out the Jets and Titans. Unfortunately, though, they faced the Tampa Bay defense in the Super Bowl. Tampa Bay intercepted Gannon five times on their way to a 48-21 blowout.
That Super Bowl loss was followed by a typical slew of Al Davis' coaching changes. I'm still waiting for the Raiders to get back to their hey-day, but that's part of being a Raiders fan. You have to suffer through the bad years to enjoy the good!
