Clinton Portis' seven years at the Washington Redskins NFL Team constantly stirs up the MVP discussions and whether he ever got his due respect as a football player. He played the starting running back position for the Redskins since 2004 and is related to Seattle Seahawks' Josh Portis.

Portis played for the University of Miami though he wanted to be at the University of South Carolina. He had a successful freshman season in 1999, but his sophomore year saw more competition and he lost his starting position. Portis clearly rebounded back the next year to win the National Championship for the Hurricanes. This championship run for Portis included unbeatable records in rushing, touchdowns, carries and receiving yards. He also ran 104 yards and took a touchdown in the Rose Bowl over Nebraska.

After college, he was drafted as 51st overall pick by the Denver Broncos NFL Team. In 2002 and 2003 he became the youngest player to score 4 and 5 touchdowns in a game. In a game over Kansas City, he caught a pass and rushed 66 yards for a touchdown and ran three touchdowns. Portis reached his turning point in NFL that day and became a household name, and brought lots of fans for him.

In 2004 Broncos traded him to the Redskins for Champ Bailey. His career at Redskins started with Coach Gibbs and in a sort ended with Gibbs. He had immediate impact with the Redskins though critics were not sure about how he will fit into the new team. He is only the third NFL runner in history to go beyond 1,500 yards three times in four seasons.

He was injury prone in 2006 and 2007, limiting his playing time and records. He was also embroiled with the Michael Vick's Dog fighting controversy in 2007 by giving statements as if to mean that he enjoys dog fighting too.

Portis signed a extension deal in 2008-2009, but 2008 saw a new coach Jim Zorn, with whom he couldn't see eye to eye like he did with Gibbs. 2009 gave him a game time concussion hit and was put on injury list. 2010 brought together Portis and his old Broncos coach, Mike Shanahan. Though he had positive relationship with the coaching staff and had good results in the games he played, his injuries restricted him again to just five games.

Portis has spoken often about how he is never the same without his favorite coach Gibbs. His best years with Redskins were the 2005 & 2007 seasons when they made the playoffs. His best advantage is his field vision and speed, his small frame and explosive moves makes it a tough task to bring him down.
