With 9 years with the Edmonton Oilers, Wayne Gretzky was the most influential players to ever play the game. He was the most popular player in the league and has been known to be the face of hockey. In his 9 years with the Oilers, I was able to watch most of his games but it was tough to really root for any other team despite the fact that I lived in California.

He started off with a lot of critics but he was able to prove them all wrong in the 1979 season. He won the Hart Memorial Trophy and was even named the league's most valuable player. He won 8 more in a row and this was easily the hottest streak that anyone has ever seen in the sports world. He sets numerous records and a lot of them were made during his first year in the NHL. He is still the youngest player to get to 50 goals and was easily a playing legend on the ice.

His most memorable season came in 1982 where he was able to surpass numerous records. He was able to score 76 goals in 1982 and he was also known as a winner. The season then ended with him having 92 goals, 212 points and 12 assists. These numbers are never seen in hockey and he was the first player to ever break the 200 points mark in the league.

His awards were too many to count but the big ones were the "Male Athlete Of The Year" award from the Associated Press, the "Sportsman Of The Year" from Sports Illustrated and the Newsmaker of the Year in 1982. Though these awards were stating that he was an amazing player, he was still a great team player. He won the Stanley Cup 4 times with the Edmonton Oilers and will continue to be the name that will forever represent the NHL.
